What do you think of books that painstakingly describe what the characters look like, and what they wear?
I hate them, absolutely. Books like the Clique series, they’re just filled with fluff. If you take out the parts about the characters’ eye colors, their “dazzlingly white teeth”, their “oh-so cute dimples”, and “Massie’s ah-mazing red leather motorcycle boots”, then you can reduce the 216-page book to a 40-page one. I mean, the plots are just so simple…yet the books still are bestsellers and get published. Why?
by the way: my opinion of this is that if i wanted to know about clothing, or look at “pretty people”, I’d be “reading” Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar right now (come on, no one actually reads the articles).
It’s not like the author is selling the clothes mentioned in the book.
I feel that its not necessary to overly describe what a character looks like – because the story itself – that’s what reveals the character to you.
A true character is described in a much more subtle way than that. Woven in through the story. In describing their strengths and their weaknesses, in their actions and in their words. Even their environment and surroundings describes who they are more than they hair color or eyes or what shoes they wear.
Unless the shoes are an integral part of the story- they just don’t matter. Some things are best left to the imagination of the reader.
